On Tuesday I'll be starting my Chemo treatment thus stepping into the unknown. You can only read so much about any subject but nothing beats experiencing it first hand.
For those who don't know, Chemotherapy is not choosy when it comes to killing cells, so while it tackles Cancer cells it also kills the good stuff resulting in an array of potentially mild to severe side effects. Hair loss is one of them but so is a higher risk of infection something, I'm most worried about.
Part of our shopping included buying products that may be helpful during my treatment. It reminds me of when you're a kid and you're going to camp and your mum makes a list of things you must take with you except this won't be much fun.
Antibacterial soap: No water needed. Just like in hospitals, it evaporates as you rub your hands with it. I got a big bottle for home and a small one to take with me should I venture out.
Sodium Bicarbonate: Used for daily mouth washes to prevent (hopefully) mouth ulcers.
Lip Balm and sun block to protect me from direct sunlight.
Baby shampoo: I know this may sound a bit strange since I won't have any hair but Vee read that it is good to massage your scalp with it...anyhow it can't hurt.
I also bought a 2008 diary just so that I can keep up with my appointments, at this time of the year they're real cheap!
If anyone can think of anything else please share.

Gosh. I can't think of anything, but I'm trying.
What about ginger tea, ginger cordial, sparkling mineral water, fresh ginger, lemons - whatever combination of ingredients you prefer to make up a refreshing anti-nausea drink? For eg you could have iced ginger tea/cordial, still or sparkling, plus or minus a twist of lemon, or a hot tea. The iced stuff could be made up in a big batch to store in the fridge prior to day 1.
Ooh! What about antibacterial wipes? This is like your small bottle of soap for out, but in a wipe pack which may work better for surfaces?
That's about all I can say, except best of luck with the mysterious and not-so-fun-sounding camp.
Bea
Alex, my thoughts are with you.
I've had 2 near death experiences and survived (not cancer btw) and even though i would not for one second compare my experiences with yours, i believe i do understand some of the feelings you may be going through, and all i can say is keep your chin up mate, you are indeed a very brave and worthwhile human being and your courage is a beacon for others too.
Thank you so much for your support Alvin, I think that good health is something that most of us take for granted until something major happens and the whole world takes a new perspective.
Thanks for the input Bea, I think Vee's got a large box of anti bacterial wipes...all the tea stuff sounds good too but I'm yet to find out how my tastes buds are going to cope..
